Most successful internet projects
What does it take to start and execute a successful Internet project? Many people might think that making money on the Internet is a breeze, but that is far from the truth. The people who have had success through Internet projects and businesses are people who invested a lot into it, not only financially, but also in terms of passion and time. It is definitely not easy and it is not going to happen overnight either.
In order to be successful in this online business it is important to be hard-working, creative, and determined. It is important to have goals, and to start out small. Each time you reach one of your goals you will be inspired to continue on, so think small before thinking big. Having long term goals is good, but it is more important to have short term goals that you will be able to reach and that will motivate you to march ahead.
Just because it is an Internet project and you are not going to your job, but rather working at home, doesn’t mean that you can work whenever you want. Make sure to work every day and put the same amount of effort and time into it as a job that you are worried about getting fired from. Remember, even though you are your own boss, this fact does not relieve you of the responsibility to be a disciplined worker. And since you are your own boss, you need to be self motivated, that is important as well.
When looking at the people who have had the most successful Internet projects ever, you should always be looking at what made them stand out and how it was they got to achieve their goals.
Sergey Brin and Larry Page (Google)
Google might be the greatest Internet success story of all time. Brin and Page started off as avid computer geeks and that is what made them successful. They were never really thinking of how they were going to make a lot of money, they were sincerely and honestly trying to create the absolute best search engine they could create, which lead to this success. Google makes up more than 80 percent of all searches that people do on the Internet and the way in which the search engine works is studies by companies in order to try and get a better ranking. It could be said that Google is the single most important project of the Internet age. And the success came from a real passion to create and innovate, not a hunger for money. They money just came naturally after their work and love for their work paid off.
Google now not only develops these search and cloud computing services, but is also involved in the most high-tech advertising technologies and earns most of its money from the AdWords program it has created for advertising. There are over a million servers around the world being run by Google and the search engine processes a billion search requests every single day.
Not only that, but Google is also the leading developed of Android applications for cell phones and has its own phones as well such as the Nexus One and Motorola Droid.
Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook)
We all know Zuckerberg, he was named the Time Magazine person of the year and has made a fortune with his Facebook creation. Starting the project in 2004, there are now more than 600 million active users of Facebook and the numbers continue to grow. Zuckerberg’s best trait is that he is always striving to tweak and improve his product and never gets tired of trying to make something better. Even though a lot of people tend to dislike changes to their Facebook pages, Zuckerberg continues to innovate and change the interface, and it has proven to be successful
every time, because the number of Facebook users never goes into decline. Most of his changes, even if they were questioned at first, stand the test of time in the end and increase Facebook’s popularity even more.
He has even had a film made about his life and the creation of Facebook, the award-winning The Social Network and the statistics for the popularity of Facebook are staggering. In late 2010, it was estimated that there were 125 million unique monthly visitors to the site every day and that over 40 percent of the entire American population had a Facebook account.
Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim (Youtube)
The creators of Youtube have succeeded by keeping their site’s goal and executive very simple and easy to use. That was the best thing to do, since the whole point of Youtube from the start was to allow any average person around the world to upload his or her video and share it with the entire world. These three entrepreneurs knew that it had to be easy to use for absolutely anyone, from young kids to grandparents, and that the success of the site would hinge on the easy of use. They actually ended up selling Youtube to Google in 2007 for over a billion dollars.
Thanks to the ease of uploading and the even easier way of sharing, but just sending a link to your friend via messenger, e-mail, text message or Facebook post, the site grew tremendously in a very short period of time. After it was officially launched in 2005, by the summer of 2006, there had already been 65,000 new videos uploaded to
the site each and every single day, which means that the site was easily receiving over 100 million video views per day. According to Youtube statistics, there are 35 hours of videos uploaded to the site every minute, making it the third most visited site on the internet after, of course, Google and Facebook.
Jeff Bezos (Amazon.com)
Bezos literally created a retail empire with his Amazon online shop. He was not content until you could buy pretty much anything on Amazon. From books to videos, CDs, mp3s, electronics, shoes, shirts, guitars, you name it, Amazon is a real retail giant that is here to stay. The most recent creation of Amazon that is thriving is the Kindle e-book reader, a fantastic original e-book that is among the most popular and can only be purchased from Amazon. Bezos is someone who will never be content with where he is at and continue to push for greater profit and more interesting innovations, which assures him a place lists such as this for many years to come.
When looking at the revenue stats of Amazon in 2010, its sales were three times
greater than the runner-up in Internet sales, Staples. There are now separate amazing websites for the U.S., Canada and UK, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and China, but you can expect that list to grow as well. Shipping worldwide from most of their sites and the shear number of different articles that can be purchased from Amazon creates a true virtual one-stop-shop for everyone, and guarantees that it will continue to thrive and continue to innovate and lead the way in online shopping for many years.
Max Levchin (Paypal)
Levchin was very smart when creating and maintaining PayPal because he knew at all times what the priorities of the company and the service needed to be. At one point in time, the service of online payment was growing greatly, and his site was receiving more and more users every day, but there were problems with secure threats and fraud that were turning a lot of people off of it. If Levchin chose to ignore or set aside those problems just because PayPal was still growing, he probably would have made the greatest mistake of his life. He did not, however, and despite the great and continuous growth, he knew that these were problems that needed to be fixed now in order to avoid jeopardizing the future of the company. He focused on these features and knew that PayPal
needed to be the most secure and safest way to pay online if the company wanted to reach its true goals. After doing this successfully, Levchin sold the company to online auction site Ebay for $1.5 billion in 2002. Thanks to knowing what the priorities were and what he needed to do first in order to secure a prosperous future for PayPal, Levchin turned out to be a tremendous success story.
Tom Anderson (Myspace)
Everyone knows Tom, because he was everyone’s first friend when they opened up their Myspace accounts. Even though Myspace has decreased in popularity significantly since the rise in popularity of Facebook, there is still no denying that it was one of the greatest Internet success stories ever. Anderson saw what then-popular social networking sites like Friendster lacked and decided that he was going to create something that would have all the features that people often complained about. The photo sharing on Myspace was simple the graphic customization f your site as well, and it also provided one of the best interfaces for bands and musicians to present their music, pictures, and everything else online. Myspace grew rapidly and was easily the most popular social networking site at one point,
and when it reached 500 million registered users, Anderson sold the site to News Corp. for $580 million. In recent years Myspace has been playing catch up to more popular sites like Twitter and Facebook, and might have gotten sloppy and confusing in trying to incorporate too many ideas into one, but there is no denying that Anderson was able to identify his target group at one point of teenagers, singles and musicians, and provide at site to them that met every one of their social networking needs.
Even though it was overtaken in popularity by Facebook in 2008, Myspace still employs over 1,000 people and receives an estimates 43.2 million unique visitors monthly in the U.S. alone.
Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia)
Wales created Wikipedia without really having a fixed idea of how to go about it, instead he just followed the process to where it led and created the intensely popular collaborative online encyclopedia that is used every day around the world by millions. The concept is in fact ingenious, it is a resource that is shaped and created by the people who use it, not something written by one party. The site has grown tremendously and features over 18 million articles that have been written collaboratively by many around the world. It is easily the most popular general reference spot on the Internet and has 365 million readers.
Instead of sticking with the original idea of an encyclopedia created by experts, it become something more than just a regular online encyclopedia, now featuring so much content that is not strictly academic in nature, which is a move that increased its use, presence and popularity by leaps and bounds.
Steve Jobs (Pixar/Apple)
If you look at Apple leader Steve Jobs and his enormous success, if you pay attention to his story, you will see that he succeeded because he never gave up. If you don’t know about his story, Jobs was actually fired from Apple when he was 30. Instead of taking that as a loss, he started his own companies, NeXt and Pixar, both of which were tremendously successful. Not only that, he later, as well all know, went on to come back to Apple and save the company and taking it to new heights of success that would have never been possible without him.
